Who Wears Short Shorts? (Me, one day, hopefully)

Happy Wednesday, yall! We half-way made it through the week! I'm in a great mood aside from the fact that I need to dehydrate myself today so I never have to pee. Why, you ask? Because I'm afraid it'll take me 13 minutes to slowly squat down and hover over the toilet, then probably won't be able to stand up, forcing me to sit there, all day, because there isn't a chance in hell I'll be able to get up.

So maybe I'm dramatic. Just get to the point already, woman.

Yesterday, we worked out legs. Today, my legs are crying. It probably doesn't help that I did squats between each of my sets on Monday. I mean, it helps my legs to look like super model legs, but it doesn't help in the sitting to pee department. Guys have all the luck.

I've been focusing on legs lately because here in good ol' Southern Louisiana, it's summer time from about March-October. I'm not being dramatic there. Just ask Leigh Ann. Speaking of Elle Noel herself, she inspired this post. Her and those hot shorts. One day I will wear shorts like that to run. Until then, I just want to wear shorts without any vajiggle jaggle hanging out (Name that reference! If you can, keep it to yourself because that's embarressing.)

I started wearing normal people shorts last summer, with the vajiggle hanging out and all. Cellulite is a B*tch, but I just didn't care. It's hot. This year I want to wear shorts confidently, and time is running out to get my summer time legs looking Beyonce-hot. (I read an article recently outlining B's workout routine. I was so pumped that I could look like her in these 3, quick, easy at-home moves! Until I read, at the very end, in fine print, that she couples this workout with 8 hours of dancing a day. Oh.)

I still love you Bee-yons

And for those of you wondering, yes, she still lives in my pantry. Hate on, haters.

Now, I don't want my legs to look like a female body builder that can bench press a truck, I just want to wear running shorts (and actually run in them). Aren't these Nike ones so cute?

And I want to have toned, fake tanned legs for the 9 months that is our summer.

The work out we did was simple. I do three sets of twelve, my husband does 4 sets of 10, of course with alot more weight than I can use just yet:
Squats with a barbell
Leg Press Machine
Leg Extension Machine
Leg Curl Machine
Lunges in place (with weights)
Weighted Calf Raises
Sumo Squats

For those exercises using weights, I just found an amount that was comfortable to me and went up a little. When it gets too easy, add more weight. Now, I am not an expert (and those of you that are, are probably laughing at the way I worded those exercises, but whatevs, just trying to help!)

If the machines intimidate you, there are a TON of great leg routines on Pinterest, like this one and this one and this one.

I'll be posting some more workouts on Pinterest as well as some summer inspiration photos. Speaking of, are you following our Operation Red Bikini Pinterest board yet? If not, what are you waiting for?!Leigh Ann and I pin way more than just bikini stuff. It's a board for everyone so check it out.

Meanwhile, I'll be trying to pee without crying, and hoping I don't like this in my shorts this summer:

Rainbows, Butterflies and Running

Morning ladies! Sorry for the lack of a post yesterday, Mondays are always crazy here. I had a great weekend with family and friends and spent all of Saturday doing makeup for a Mardi Gras ball. Have I mentioned how much I love Mardi Gras?

Things are going wonderfully around here. I finally feel like things are falling into place. Lots of great news, happy times, rainbows, butterflies, all that jazz.
In BIG BIG Southern Girl Gets Fit news, my foot is healing up, finally! I ran pain free yesterday, for the first time since December 29th. I ran a few times here and there in between, but my foot was not ready. I finally feel like it’s good to go but I’m still taking it easy. I ran three miles, very slowly, just to be sure. The craziest thing happened, too. I got this surge of energy and pride that I’ve never felt before. Even though it was my slowest miles ever, I felt like I was a runner. I think it’s maybe due to the fact that being on “rest” from running for so long really killed me. Months ago, I wouldn’thave cared either way. In fact, I would’ve been glad I didn’t have to run. But now, I am so glad to be back. I won’t have time to build up to 13 miles come race day, but I’ll run a lot more than I imagined I would. For the 3 of you those of you who are country fans, this song really pushed me last night. The lyrics can be applied to anything, plus, Luke Bryan looks really good in jeans.

The Only Way I Know-Jason Aldean, Luke Bryan, Eric Church

Chorus:
That’s the only way I know
Don’t stop till everything’s gone
Straight ahead, never turn round
Don’t back up, don’t back down
Full throttle, wide open
You get tired, but you don’t show it
Dig a little deeper when you think you can’t dig no more
That’s the only way I know

Pre-run, so excited!

After my run, my husband got home and got dressed for the gym. He’s been meeting up with a friend in the evenings to work out. I asked him what time we were leaving and he said “Wait, you just ran right? And you’re coming to the gym too?” Well duh. I think he forgets about that red bikini I think I’m wearing this summer. Silly man. I ate three Shot Blocks so I wouldn’t crash and burn and we were on our way. We got in a great biceps and chest workout and I have to admit, I felt a little legit working out with the boys. In between sets, I did squats (Every single time) and boy am I feeling it today. Who wears short shorts?

Any of you girls wear lifting gloves? I am thinking of investing a pair (a girly, cute pair of course) and doing agiveaway on my blog. Anyone interested?

Tonight we’re doing tris and shoulders and tomorrow is legs. I plan to keep incorporating a few miles of running through out the week as long as I’m still pain free. I’m also stretching like it’s going out of style, so here’s to hoping I’ll be injury/pain free for a long long time!
And before I go, a little Tuesday motivation for you:

New Experience: Sushi Making

Morning girls, and welcome to all my new readers! I posted a picture the other night from my sushi-making class, and a ton of you wanted to know more. Now that the pictures are posted, I'd love to share my experience.

One of my husband's friend's wives asked me if I'd be interested in taking a cooking class with her. Sign me up! Then, I found out it was sushi, and I drove to the location that day and parked my car and slept in it till it was time for class got even more excited. This girl loves sushi. I didn't always love sushi, though. In fact, the first few times I ate it just to be cool, and I secretly gagged and had to coach myself into not throwing up. Of course, that's just because I went big and ordered the raw-est, fishiest thing on the menu. I was clueless. I finally found rolls that I liked and now I crave sushi weekly. I wonder if there are meeting for that?

The class took place at E's Kitchen, a new business in our town. They sell really fun and useful kitchen utensils, accessories and spices, mixes...just about everything! (I bought Pecan oil and Schawarma seasoning...yum) They offer classes and now do a food truck round up, which I will experience soon too. The owner, Paul, is absolutely hilarious and so hospitable. I got there a little early and he asked if I wanted wine. When I stood up to get it, he insisted I sit down, and he delivered it right to me. Holla

The rest of the girls arrived and the teacher of the class, a local sushi chef, began with a brief lesson on the history of sushi.

This guy was hilarious, yet very informative.

He made a tray of sushi before we all got there, to be eaten while he taught. Come to mama. There were traditional California rolls and a veggie roll he created.

After he showed us the proper technique to rolling the sushi, and to me the most important part, the proper amount of filling, he let everyone who attended make their own rolls. It was so much fun!
My roll was hideous, only because I need to brush up on my knife skills. And lucky for me, E's offers a free knife skills class. Although it was ugly, it was absolutely delicious.

After the sushi, Paul let us sample coconut sake from a local wine and spirits shop. I am usually not a fan of sake but the coconut variety is a new favorite.

I love experiencing new things and this class was right up my alley. I can't wait to make sushi at home and wow the hubs. We've tried before and have since opted to just eat it in restaurants because we couldn't get the hang of it. Not anymore, kids. Now who wants to come over for sushi..

and give me a free spray tan?

Transformation Thursday: Food for Thought

Good morning, folks. I always end up forgetting to say that because most of the time I write these posts at night and have them set up to post in the morning. But good morning none the less!

Don't let the title of this post fool you, I'm not talking about food today. I know, I'm a tease. Today I’m talking about progress. I posted two pictures tonight (or last night since..yeah, you get the idea) on Instagram and got such great support. I also met an amazing woman through Instagram that I wanted to share with you guys. More on her shortly.

The picture on the left was taken October 2011. The picture on the right was taken two days before Christmas, 2012.

Same picture left, right picture was a few days ago. (That pose was to show off the first pair of shorts I've ever worn to the gym!) Am I where I want to be? No.  Do I get discouraged? Yep.  But seeing the comparison tells me two things. First, I will never be the person on the left again. I’ve spoken about this picture before. When I was that person, I didn’t think I was really that big. I thought those jeans made me looks skinny –hold in your laughter. I knew I wasn’t skinny, but I didn’t realize how big I had gotten. Denial ain’t just a river in Egypt, my friends.

The second thing these comparisons teach me is that while I have a long way to go on this journey, I have also come such a long way from where I’ve been. That makes me extremely proud, and motivates me even more. I can’t wait to compare these pictures to the ones I’ll take in a few months. And maybe even in some random red bikini…

Now, I’d like to introduce you all to this amazing lady, Elisha, over at Elisha Run Run Run. Check this girl’s progress out! I asked her if I could share her transformation on my blog and she gave me the a-okay.

We connected on Instagram, having both gotten an X-ray on our feet Monday. She is a runner too, and experiencing the same type of problems that I am. We started emailing one another then I checked out her blog and could not believe my eyes. What a motivation.  I want that transformation! Like me, she never thought she was that big, and has a great husband who never made her feel any less beautiful. But luckily for her, she took a stand and did something about her health, not only for her kids and husband, but for herself as well. She is very new to the blogging world, but I know she has so much to offer all of us ladies who need a little push or a reminder that anything is possible. Go check her out and leave her some love!

I was also going to tell you all about my awesome experience last night-a sushi making class! That will have to wait, though, because the guy that owns the store where the class took place took tons of pictures for me to put on my blog, but they’re all on his phone! #bloggerproblems

It’ll have to wait till he posts them on their Facebook page. Until then, I will say that it was such a great experience that I will definitely be repeating. The theme of the class was “New Year's Resolution” so all the rolls were super healthy. I’m sure you can imagine what a relief that was to the girl who plans out her calories for the day by 9amJ

X-Ray Results: Down but not Out

I never go to the doctor, unless I am about to keel over and die (which has thankfully never happened). The lack of running in my life feels as dramatic, though, so I sucked it up. I needed to rule out stress fracture for piece of mind and for my sanity. I needed an xray.

A little back-tracking to fill you in. After a week of no foot pain (still not running) I attempted to slowly start back up again, with permission from my PT. I ran Friday, and Saturday I intended on running with my group. They were going to run seven miles and I planned on 3. I didn't even make it through stretching. The pain was back, this time more beneath my foot than on the side. I went home, down but not defeated. Monday morning I made this appointment to get an X-ray and maybe some answers. The weird thing is, I walk fine on it. It used to hurt just to walk but it's not that bad anymore. Running triggered that weird pain again, though.

I got an X-ray and waited for an hour. Longest hour of my life, ya'll. The doctor comes in and tells me it is not a stress fracture. HOO-RAY! Best news I've heard. Ever. Then it felt like he just ran over my puppy. Boom. "Stop running. Some people are not made to be runners." Say what?! I have heard several of my runner friends tell me to never see a podiatrist because they are anti-running. This guy was just a GP, though. He told me to baby the foot for a long time, and give it a few months, but ultimately, no running. "Running is too hard on the body," he says. I remained calm and listened to his words, but I'm stubborn. I will be getting a second opinion. I am not sure whether a podiatrist is the answer or a Sports Medicine doctor, athletic trainer, etc.

I will continue getting my cardio on the bike and elliptical so I don't lose any endurance. It's not the same as a good, long run, but it is what it is. I will not be defeated by this. I am a runner. I am just experiencing a minor setback. I may be down but I am not out. I may not be running the 2013 Rock N Roll Half Marathon but you better believe I'll run 2014. This dog still has alot of fight left in her (Did I just call myself a dog? As long as it's a cute breed...)

Once again, I want to say thank you for all the amazing support I've gotten from you ladies. Where would I be without you? I promise to include every single one of you in my Grammy acceptance speech. Even if it just so happens to be acted out in my bathroom mirror. Seriously though, I know I could not have kept it together had it not been for all your kind words and advice. I also know this:

:)

Other happenings around here:
I had a great weekend and a wonderful Monday. That's right, Monday. This weekend I'll be doing makeup for a huge Mardi Gras ball in my city and I have several women booked to beautify. This means my Saturday will be B-A-N-A-N-A-S (admit it, you just sang that like Gwen Stefani. Just me? Okay.) I am so excited Mardi Gras is early this year. It's my second favorite holiday. More on that later.

And lastly, best husband ever award goes to this man, for making me a healthy dinner on a nightly basis!

Hello. Yum.

Wednesday, January 16, 2013

What's that? Oh...angels singing.

That's right. Angels are indeed singing.

My foot finally feels 100% back to normal. I cannot explain the sheer excitement this gives me. I had not run in two weeks, smack dab in the middle of half marathon training. For those of you who don't know, training for a 13.1 mile race requires something called running. To say I was nervous, frustrated, angry and scared is an understatement (as I'm sure you all could tell reading my blog since this started). I've gone through hissy fits that had me swearing I wouldn't even go to New Orleans the weekend of the half if I couldn't participate, I would throw away my running shoes, etc. So I'm a drama queen. Or 5 years old. I had gotten emails about readers who experienced similar symptoms and one day the pain just disappeared. Those emails gave me hope. But I also got emails from readers saying they had the same symptoms and had to have surgery or wear a boot. Those emails freaked. me. the. hell. out.

I ran two miles on the treadmill yesterday because I couldn't wait. I felt fine and feel fine today. I will be calling the PT I saw last week just to get the green light on continuing with my training. I will also do the stretches he gave me, religiously, because I truly believe that's what helped me.

I use Hello Kitty stickers because they were the cheapest stickers I could find. Who knew stickers were so expensive? Sorry future children of mine, you are not getting stickers.

Once our insurance finally goes into effect , I really think I will see that PT for preventative measures. He can help me to stretch and condition, which in turn will keep me injury free. I feel like doing a cartwheel yall! This is great, exciting news, and I want to run a marathon right now to celebrate. Ok, not.

I've been doing so well with my eating and counting calories and the scale is definitely reflecting that. I haven't been cheating like I usually do, and don't feel deprived one bit. Leigh Ann and I are doing a spin/pilates class for the first time tomorrow night, and I'm extremely excited to try something new. You'll definitely get a recap of that on Friday. Hope everyone has a happy hump day!

I love an empty gym! And shameless self portraits.

As if you weren't already tired of hearing about my bum foot..

I finally saw a Physical Therapist this morning about my foot. I don't feel better and I don't feel worse. He couldn't exactly "diagnose" me without an x-ray, so I didn't really get real answers, just ways to help if it's not fractured.

I explained my pain and how it started and he did a few tests, if you will, on my foot, hip and hamstring. He noticed my right side was alot tigher and weaker. Because of this, it may just be tendonitis, as there is a tendon running directly to the area I'm feeling pain. I am truly hoping that's what it is. He gave me several exercises and stretches to strengthen my right side and told me to try them twice a day for a week. He even gave me the Thera-Bands to use, for free. Holla for no dollas!
If I have no relief, I need to see an doctor and get an x-ray. If the x-ray shows no fracture, he of course suggested regular physical therapy.

I was so focused on what he was saying, I never had time to ask a few questions I'd been having. What kind of shoes should I be wearing to work? What exercises can I be doing in the meantime? What are the main symptons of a stress fracture? Etc. etc. I have let the WebMD disease get me and have been researching like crazy, which is why I am going crazy, and no doubt driving Leigh Ann crazy. I am so thankful for my friendship with this girl. She is not only hilarious, motivational and sweet as can be, but she is the Positive Patty to my Negative Nancy.

I asked her this morning if she would still go to New Orleans for the half, knowing she couldn't run it. She immediatly fired back with "You are running that half". I so so hope she's right.

In the meantime, I have Operation Red Bikini to think about, and while this will slow me down, it will not stop this stubborn girl. I got a text from the hubs (again with the hubs word, yuck) last night asking if I wanted to go to the gym when I got off work. I agreed and got all psyched up to go. He then texts me an hour later saying "Change of plans, thought you got off at 5:30 tonight". Note: I never get off at 5:30. I get off either at 6:30, 7:00 or 5. Poor fellow. Anyway, between dinner and getting to the gym, no way would he make his new, early bed time. I was already in the mood (for the gym, sorry hubs) so I decided to do something I've never done. I got home, changed into workout attire, ate about a fourth of a serving of what I'd normally eat for dinner, rested a while, then hit the gym anyway. I got there around 8:30, which is late for me on a weeknight, yall.

So what does a bum-footed, penguin-looking limper do in the gym, you ask? There are tons of things. I had done an intense arm workout the previous day and was still sore, so I decided to focus on cardio and abs. I watched Biggest Loser on the stationary bike (talk about motivation) for 45 minutes.

I then used the exercise ball more than I ever have before. You can do alot of things with that thing. I moved on to this Pinterest work out. It will have you super sore the next day, I swear! It's absolutely one of my favorite Pinterest work out finds.
I use the middle one because I am part Hobbit, part troll that lives under a bridge. I have the personality of one right now, thanks to my stupid effin FOOT!!!#$%( See?

I followed all of this with some foam rolling and stretching and called it a night. The only downside to working out so late is that you'll be so wired you won't be able to sleep till midnight. In my case anyway.

Tonight I will just take it easy, as I don't get off work till 7, so I'll do all the stretching my PT showed me and get a good night's sleep. I feel like the sleep will just do a world of difference.

I know my posts lately have been very "womp womppppp"-y but I promise they will improve soon. I just wanted to give you all an update and have an excuse to say 'Holla for no dollas.'

Just a Quickie...with Jillian Michaels

Get your mind out the gutter, fools.

Just a quick update because I know ya'll are all on the edge of your seats dying to know how my life is going. *cue reader eye roll*  Also note, this will be my first and only post sans photos because blogger is being douchey.

The Foot:
If anything, it had gotten worse. I woke up one morning with my foot throbbing while just lying in bed. Before, it only hurt to walk on. I have been popping Motrin and rolling with a water bottle to no avail. I guess I kept telling myself it would go away. I have tried everything short of chopping it off. My husband suggested compression so he wrapped it for me on Saturday. All it did was throb more. His sister, an RN, suggested applying heat, no ice. This was the first time I'd heard this but I was willing to try it. She loaned me a heating pad and that lasted about 20 solid minutes of torture. Never again. The only thing that seems to help is ice and stretching. Thankfully, I was able to schedule a free sports injury evaluation with a Physical Therapist tomorrow morning. This morning it is slightly better, but the pain is still there. Thanks to all my amazing readers who have offered advice! Just keep praying I am not out of the half marathon for good! I will absolutely see a doctor when our insurance kicks in if I'm still in pain.

The Weekend:
Friday night we went to dinner with our neighbors at Bonefish Grill. Great company and great food. We're in the midst of hunting season so S has been up at 4 on weekends for that. I am a light sleeper people. Not a good combo. Of course with his new job he's been up at 4:50 so I better get used to it. I'm hoping my morning 5am workouts stick. I'll be up anyway.
Saturday was a lazy day for me as I had been elevating my foot. Just waited for S to return. He took a nap then we ventured out for dinner and Rascal Scooter Racing.

Yes, I rode the cart at the Walmarts. New all time low. My foot didn't hurt though, so I win. We had a ton of items to buy so I know I'd do alot of walking and I didn't even want to put myself through that. Slap a tiara on me and call me Honey Boo Boo.

Sunday I went to the gym because I just had to. I did a great arm work out and some abs and rode the stationary bike for the 7 miles I missed running on Saturday. It felt good to be active and my arms are sore today. Love it!

Biggest Loser:
I have been excited about the new season since months ago when it was announced that Jillian was back. Who else has a severe girl crush on Ms. Michaels?
(insert phtoto of Jillian's abs)

I want to be her and marry her in Hawaii all at the same time. I definitely was brought to tears a couple times during last night's episode. Don't hate! I am so looking forward to watching this season though. Any favorite competitors so far? I was so sad TC had to leave!

More tomorrow after my appointment, and this week will be the first give away for OPERATION RED BIKINI Participants! Stay tuned:)

Happenings and Hurting

Before I get to the womp womp wompppp stuff, here's a little bit that's been going on in my world.

New Year's Eve: Snoozeville. To me, it's the second most over rated holiday ever, behind Easter. Sorry Jesus, my a** just can't handle another Reese's egg(but my body, my bodyyyy's telling me yessssss) Wow, I totally just referenced Bump n Grind and said ass all in the same sentence with Jesus. Sorry again J! We scrambled to make plans and invited a couple people to our house last minute. Most backed out so it wasn't really a barrel of fun. I fell asleep on our couch at one, with the neighbor's dog. Am I really that person? *Note to self, re-evaluate yo life.
(One of maybe three pictures taken that night. Waste of an outfit!)

My husband started a new, much better job on Monday and I'm so happy for him slightly jealous. This means he'll be home every night, off every other Friday and he already starts out with 20 vacation days for the year. Me on the other hand, I am workin' with negative four hours of vacation time. See where my jealousy lies. He's paid his dues though, so he deserves it.
This would be him making his lunch the night before his first day on the job. Leftover honey baked ham and 23 tablespoons of mayo and the dude lost a pound over the holidays. Life is so unfair.

I am continuing to get an amazing response about Operation Red Bikini! I am so proud and thrilled that so many of you are taking the challenge and I cannot WAIT to see the results. Some of you don't have your emails attached to your blogger profiles so I cannot respond via email. I am not ignoring you! I have read all the comments, just can't say anything back. Also, I have over 45 requests on Instagram and my IG app is being weird and only letting me accept two or three at a time. Also not ignoring you, just may take a while for me to accept those requests.

Now, on to less fun things. My foot. Those of you that follow me on IG already know about my injury. So sit tight while you hear about it again.

Saturday was our 5 mile group run. I ran at 8 with my girls and while it was tough mentally, I felt fine physically. I went home, showered, and headed out to do makeup for a wedding for the next three hours (this isn't odd, as I usually go shopping for groceries or do something else on my feet after a run) Sunday and Monday I felt fine still. Monday night I got home and as I was walking around cleaning up before our guests arrives, I started feeling a dull pain on the outside of my right foot. See here:

I thought it would just go away but Tuesday I was miserable. I literally was walking with a limp. I started icing that bad boy Monday night, into Tuesday. I then began rolling with a frozen water bottle everywhere we went. Yesterday, I felt like it might be improving, but I work a desk job so I don't have time to move around much. I also constantly rolled a frozen water bottle all day long yesterday, so it was too numb most of the day to notice. This morning, killing me again. I went to the gym because I refused to quit moving completely. I hadn't run since Saturday (and of course I won't until the pain is completely gone) I figured I'd take it easy and use the stationary bike, putting little to no pressure on my foot. I don't know if I just did too much or if it's that bad, but my foot is feeling like it was stomped on by an overweight elephant this morning. I have stressed myself the f out tried doing some research and emailed several of my pro-running blogger friends for advice.

I know the best thing to do is to see a doctor, but with my husband just starting a new job, we are between insurance companies right now, and won't have coverage until his paperwork is processed. I have no idea when this will be. I read that with a stress fracture, I'd have pain at the top of my foot and I don't. I also read other injuries would cause bruising. I have no bruising or swelling at all. It's also not in the same spot as Planter's so I really have no clue what the hell is going on.

I just registered for my half marathon this past weekend. It's at the end of February. As terrified as I was to run it, I am even more terrified I won't be able to. Have any of you experienced this pain with running before? Any advice or suggestions are welcome. And if you're a prayer, say a little prayer for me (I'll need extra since I probably already pissed the big guy off with the first paragraph in this post).

ETA: This will NOT affect ORB for me. I will still be counting calories and doing what I can physically. I hope you are all gettin' it in the gym or on the pavement too!
